  1. Three Orange Tart with Epic Ales Solar Trans Amplifier (and a hop monster)

As citrus season winds down around here, I’m reminded that it usually signifies the beginning of spring. Cherry blossoms are starting to bud outside my window, the evenings are starting to get longer, and soon the little hop shoots will show themselves on my back porch. This year I plan to dig up my hop plants and separate a few of the rhizomes so I can grow multiple bunches of bines.

I say all this as a whopping winter storm is hitting the Washington coast, so perhaps my hop gardening will have to wait until spring actually starts to show her face around here.

This entry is the second in a two-part series. It’s a delicious tart made with 3 types of oranges and one of my favorite beers: Epic Ales Solar Trans Amplifier. This builds on my last post, utilizing the marmalade I made with the same beer. On top of that, my dear friend Mark of Leggoman Productions has made an incredible video for me. His theme as of late has been monsters, so this video aptly features a hop monster that chows down on my cake.

Citrus season is my favorite food season of the year. I love to just stand in the citrus area of my local grocery store and peruse all of the varieties of wonderfully sparkling fruit. Citrus is a burst of flavor and an explosion of color during an otherwise dreary time of year. Especially here in the Pacific Northwest where the winters can be incredibly dreary.

Solar Trans Amplifier is kind of like that winter citrus surprise for me. Sure, it’s a great refreshing beer in the summer, but this year I’ve had cravings for it during the rainiest of evenings. The spicy flavors in it are the warm and comforting kind: camomile and ginger. Perfect for a cozy winter’s evening. It was a no-brainer for me to pair one of my favorite beers with one of my favorite foods. I chose to feature Cara Cara oranges in this marmalade because of their delicious flavor (almost floral) and their interesting color. This is the first in a two-part series featuring this beer paired with oranges.
